this was a fun timberframe to design and fabricate. The double beams (8x10 above wth live edge curve below) was a design solution to a specific constraint. In this instance the structural engineer was looking to include a timber much larger in section, and of a species (douglas fir) that is not native to our region. Our solution was to take otherwise marginal timber (curved live edge pieces) and "sister" them with 8x10 pine beam above. A little more in labour but much less cost of materials with lighter ecological footprint.
